SEO Audit Checklist 2026 (Technical + Content)

You need a structured SEO audit checklist that covers every angle, from the server configuration files that search engines read before anything else, to the backlink profile that determines whether Google trusts your domain enough to rank it.
Search engine optimisation has changed substantially heading into 2026. Google’s algorithm now weighs INP (Interaction to Next Paint) instead of FID, AI Overviews are reshaping how organic results appear, and the March 2025 core update hit thin and derivative content harder than any previous rollout. An audit framework built three years ago won’t catch half the issues that matter today.
This checklist is organised into seven categories. Each item reflects a real problem we’ve encountered during audits across e-commerce sites, SaaS platforms, professional services firms, and local businesses in the UK and US markets. Some items take ten minutes to check. Others require dedicated crawling tools. All of them affect whether your pages appear in search results, and what happens after they do.
1. Technical SEO Checklist
Every SEO audit checklist should start here. Technical SEO is the infrastructure layer. It determines whether search engine crawlers can access your pages, whether those pages get indexed, and whether users experience them fast enough to stay. Content quality is irrelevant if Googlebot can’t reach the page, or if it loads so slowly that visitors leave before the first heading renders.
Crawlability
Google needs permission and a clear path to discover your pages. That sounds straightforward, but misconfigured crawl settings are one of the most common issues we find during audits. On one client site, the entire /services/ directory was blocked in robots.txt. Nobody noticed for five months. Those pages never appeared in search results during that period, and the traffic loss was only attributed to “seasonality” until we ran the audit.
Items to check:
- robots.txt file: Is it accessible at your domain root? Are critical pages or directories accidentally blocked with Disallow rules? Validate using the robots.txt testing tool within Google Search Console. Pay particular attention to staging environment rules that may have been copied to production.
- XML sitemap: Is it up to date? Does it include all pages that should be indexed? Are there URLs in the sitemap that return 404 errors or carry noindex tags? Have you submitted the sitemap to Search Console? If your site has more than 50,000 URLs, are you using sitemap index files correctly?
- Crawl budget: For sites under 500 pages, this rarely matters. For large e-commerce sites with thousands of product pages, faceted navigation, filters, and internal search result pages can waste crawl budget on low-value URLs. Manage these with robots.txt, canonical tags, or the URL Parameters tool.
- Redirect chains: Page A redirects to Page B, which redirects to Page C. Googlebot typically follows up to five redirects, but each hop reduces crawl efficiency and dilutes link equity. Shorten chains so every redirect points directly to the final destination.
- Orphan pages: Pages with no internal links pointing to them. If Googlebot can only find a page through the sitemap (or can’t find it at all), that page receives minimal crawl priority. Use Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, or Lumar to identify orphaned URLs.
Indexing
Being crawled doesn’t guarantee being indexed. After crawling a page, Google evaluates whether it’s worth adding to the index. Pages with thin content, duplicate material, or poor quality signals may be crawled repeatedly but never indexed.
- Search Console index coverage: Check the “Pages” report regularly. Investigate pages flagged as “Crawled – currently not indexed” and “Discovered – currently not indexed.” The first usually indicates a quality problem. The second often means Google hasn’t allocated crawl resources to fetch the page yet.
- Canonical tags: Does every page have a correct self-referencing canonical? Are there pages where multiple URLs point to the same canonical, creating confusion about which version Google should index? Cross-domain canonicals require extra scrutiny.
- Noindex directives: Check for accidental noindex meta tags or X-Robots-Tag HTTP headers on pages you want indexed. WordPress plugins, particularly Yoast and Rank Math, can sometimes apply noindex rules through category or tag settings that affect more pages than intended.
- Duplicate content: Do www and non-www versions serve the same content? HTTP and HTTPS? Trailing slash and non-trailing slash variants? Each pair should resolve to a single canonical version via 301 redirects. Use Screaming Frog’s “Duplicate” tab to catch issues your manual checks miss.
- Parameter handling: Session IDs, tracking parameters (utm_source, fbclid), sort orders, and filter combinations can all generate duplicate URLs. Ensure these are either canonicalised to the clean URL or excluded from indexing entirely.
Site Speed & Core Web Vitals
Google has used Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor since 2021. The metrics have evolved: INP (Interaction to Next Paint) replaced FID (First Input Delay) in March 2024 and remains the interaction responsiveness metric in 2026. Across the UK and US, sites that pass all three Core Web Vitals thresholds see measurably higher engagement metrics and, in competitive SERPs, better rankings.

What to check:
- PageSpeed Insights: Test both mobile and desktop. Pay attention to the distinction between field data (real user metrics from CrUX) and lab data (simulated). Field data is more reliable for understanding actual user experience because it reflects real devices, real network conditions, and real user behaviour.
- LCP optimisation: Are hero images served in WebP or AVIF format? Is lazy loading correctly implemented (it should not be applied to above-the-fold images)? Is server response time (TTFB) below 600 ms? For sites on shared hosting, TTFB alone can push LCP beyond acceptable thresholds.
- INP optimisation: Identify long JavaScript tasks exceeding 50 ms using Chrome DevTools Performance panel. Audit third-party scripts: analytics, chat widgets, consent management platforms, ad pixels. Each one adds to the main thread workload. Defer or remove anything non-essential.
- CLS issues: Do all images and videos have explicit width and height attributes? Are dynamically injected elements (ad slots, cookie consent banners, newsletter popups) causing layout shifts? Is the font loading strategy using

HTTPS & Security
SSL certificates have been a baseline requirement for years, but audit findings show they still cause problems, especially certificate renewals, mixed content issues, and incomplete redirects.
- SSL certificate validity: Is the certificate active and not approaching expiration? Is auto-renewal configured? Expired certificates trigger browser warnings that instantly destroy user trust and click-through rates.
- Mixed content: Are any resources (images, scripts, stylesheets, fonts) loaded over HTTP on HTTPS pages? Modern browsers block mixed active content and may display warnings for mixed passive content.
- HTTP to HTTPS redirect: Do all HTTP URLs 301-redirect to their HTTPS equivalents? Test several page types, not just the homepage. CMS migrations sometimes break redirect rules for specific URL patterns.
- Security headers: Are Content-Security-Policy, X-Content-Type-Options, Strict-Transport-Security (HSTS), and X-Frame-Options headers implemented? While not direct ranking factors, they protect against attacks that could compromise your site and its search presence.
Mobile Compatibility
Google’s indexing system operates on a mobile-first basis. The mobile version of your site is what Google crawls, indexes, and uses for ranking. A desktop site that looks perfect is irrelevant if the mobile experience has problems.
- Responsive design: Test all page types (homepage, product pages, blog posts, contact forms, checkout flows) on multiple mobile screen sizes. Chrome DevTools device emulation covers common breakpoints, but real-device testing catches issues that emulators miss.
- Tap targets: Buttons and links need adequate spacing. Google recommends a minimum tap target of 48×48 CSS pixels with at least 8 pixels of spacing between adjacent targets. Cramped navigation menus and tightly packed footer links are frequent offenders.
- Viewport meta tag: Confirm that
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">is present. Without it, mobile browsers render the page at desktop width and scale it down, producing a poor experience. - Content parity: Is any content hidden on mobile via CSS (display:none or visibility:hidden)? Google indexes the mobile version, so content hidden from mobile users may not be indexed at all. Accordions and expandable sections are fine because the content is in the DOM, but content removed entirely from the mobile template is a problem.
2. Content & E-E-A-T Checklist
Technical infrastructure gets your pages crawled and indexed. Content quality determines where they rank. Google’s E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) has become the de facto standard for evaluating content since 2023, and the 2025 core updates reinforced it by penalising sites with large volumes of low-quality, undifferentiated pages. Title Tags & Meta Descriptions
These are the first things a searcher sees in the results page. A well-optimised title tag can double your click-through rate without changing your ranking position at all.
- Title tag length: Aim for 50-60 characters. Google truncates longer titles, and if the truncation cuts your primary keyword, you lose both relevance signals and user clarity.
- Keyword placement: Is the target keyword in the first half of the title? It should appear naturally, not stuffed in. “SEO Audit Checklist: 47 Items for 2026” works. “SEO Audit Checklist SEO Audit Guide SEO Tips” does not.
- Uniqueness: Does every page have a distinct title tag? Duplicate titles across multiple pages signal poor content differentiation to Google. Export all title tags via Screaming Frog and sort for duplicates.
- Meta descriptions: Keep them between 150-155 characters. Include a value proposition or specific detail that differentiates your page from the other nine results on the SERP. Google doesn’t always use your written meta description, but when it does, a compelling description lifts CTR significantly.
- Engagement triggers: Including the current year (2026), specific numbers, or qualifying words (checklist, guide, comparison, step-by-step) in your title increases click-through rates. Data from our campaigns shows titles with numbers get 15-20% more clicks than those without.
Heading Hierarchy
Heading tags create the structural outline of your page for both users and search engines. They are not decorative elements.
- Single H1: Each page should have exactly one H1 tag containing the primary keyword. Multiple H1s dilute the topical signal.
- Logical nesting: H2 tags for main sections, H3 tags for subsections within those. Don’t jump from H1 to H4. The hierarchy should make sense if you stripped out all body text and only read the headings.
- Keyword variations: Use synonyms and related terms in subheadings. Instead of repeating “SEO audit” in every H2, use variations like “site analysis,” “technical review,” “content evaluation,” and “performance assessment.” This broadens the semantic footprint of the page.
Content Quality & Depth
Thin content was the primary casualty of Google’s 2024-2025 Helpful Content updates. Pages with 300 words of surface-level information no longer rank for competitive queries. But length alone isn’t the fix. A 5,000-word article that repeats the same points five different ways performs worse than a focused 2,000-word piece that adds genuine insight.
- Competitive length analysis: Check the word count and content depth of pages ranking on page one for your target keywords. If the top five results average 2,500 words and your page has 600, you’re unlikely to compete. But if the top results are all 1,200 words and you write 4,000 words of padding, that won’t help either.
- E-E-A-T signals: Is the author’s name and biography visible on the page? Does the author have demonstrable expertise in the subject? Are there source references, data citations, or links to supporting evidence? Google’s Quality Rater Guidelines specifically instruct human raters to look for these elements.
- Freshness: When was the content last updated? Outdated statistics, references to discontinued tools, or information about algorithm changes from 2022 undermine trust. Review and refresh high-value content at least twice a year.
- Search intent alignment: What does the person typing your target keyword actually want? Information? A comparison? A product page? If someone searches “SEO audit checklist,” they want a practical, usable list, not a sales pitch for audit services. Your content must match the intent behind the query.
Keyword Cannibalisation
When multiple pages on your site target the same keyword, Google can’t determine which one to rank. The result is that both pages perform worse than either would alone. This is surprisingly common on sites that publish blog content regularly without a clear keyword strategy.
- In Search Console, filter the Performance report by query and check whether multiple URLs appear for the same search term. If positions fluctuate between two or more URLs for the same keyword, cannibalisation is likely occurring.
- Consider consolidating similar pages. Merge the content into a single, stronger page and 301-redirect the weaker URL. This concentrates ranking signals instead of splitting them.
- Every page should have one clearly defined primary keyword that doesn’t overlap with any other page on the site. Document this in a keyword map to prevent future conflicts.

3. On-Page SEO Checklist
On-page SEO covers the optimisation elements within each individual page. Where technical SEO addresses site-wide infrastructure, on-page SEO focuses on page-level details: internal links, images, URL structure, and structured data. Small adjustments here compound across hundreds of pages into measurable ranking improvements.
Internal Linking Structure
Internal links define your site’s information architecture. Google follows them to discover pages, understand topical relationships, and distribute PageRank. Despite being one of the most controllable ranking levers available, internal linking is consistently under-utilised. Most sites rely entirely on navigation menus and footers, ignoring the value of contextual links within body content.
- Click depth: Can your most important pages (core services, high-value landing pages, key product categories) be reached within three clicks from the homepage? Pages buried deeper receive less crawl attention and less PageRank flow.
- Contextual links: Are blog posts and content pages linking to relevant service pages and to each other using descriptive anchor text? “Learn more about search engine optimisation” is better than “click here.” The anchor text tells Google what the target page is about.
- Broken internal links: Links pointing to pages that return 404 errors waste crawl budget and create dead ends for users. Run a crawl with Screaming Frog or Ahrefs Site Audit to find them. Fix broken links by updating the href or implementing 301 redirects.
- Orphan pages: Pages with no inbound internal links are invisible to Google’s normal crawling process. If the page matters, it needs at least one contextual internal link from a relevant page. If it doesn’t matter, consider whether it should exist at all.
Image Optimisation
Images are typically the heaviest assets on a page and the biggest contributors to slow load times. They also represent an opportunity: Google Images drives meaningful traffic for many industries, and well-optimised images can earn featured snippets and image pack placements.
- Alt text: Every image should have descriptive, natural alt text that explains what the image shows. “Team discussing quarterly SEO audit results” is useful. “img-2847.jpg” or an empty alt attribute is not. Alt text serves accessibility requirements (screen readers depend on it) and provides indexing context for search engines.
- File size: Are images compressed? WebP or AVIF formats reduce file size by 25-50% compared to JPEG and PNG without visible quality loss. Any image over 100 KB should be questioned. Tools like Squoosh, ShortPixel, or Cloudflare’s Polish feature can automate compression.

- Lazy loading: Apply lazy loading (

- Validation: Test your structured data with Google’s Rich Results Test. Check Search Console’s “Enhancements” reports for schema errors or warnings. Invalid schema won’t generate rich results and may confuse Google’s understanding of your content.
- Breadcrumb markup: Implement breadcrumb navigation both in the visible HTML and as BreadcrumbList schema. Breadcrumbs help users navigate, help Google understand site hierarchy, and can appear directly in search results.
- Speakable schema: For content targeting voice search or Google Assistant, Speakable schema identifies sections suitable for text-to-speech playback. This is above all relevant for news and informational content in 2026.
4. Off-Page & Backlink Checklist
Off-page SEO encompasses everything that happens outside your website that influences your search rankings. Backlinks remain the most powerful off-page signal, but brand mentions, online reviews, and social presence also contribute. The quality bar for links has risen steadily: a single editorial link from a respected industry publication is worth more than fifty links from low-quality directories.
Backlink Profile Analysis
Your backlink profile is still the strongest external ranking factor in organic search. But in 2026, Google’s link spam detection has become sophisticated enough that manipulative link building creates more risk than reward. The focus should be on earning legitimate, editorially given links from relevant, authoritative sources.
- Backlink inventory: Use Ahrefs, Semrush, or Moz to export your complete backlink profile. How many unique referring domains link to your site? Compare this number against your primary competitors. The referring domain count matters more than total link count because 500 links from one domain carry the same weight as one.
- Domain authority distribution: What percentage of your referring domains have a Domain Rating (or Domain Authority) above 40? A healthy profile includes links across the authority spectrum, but a concentration of links exclusively from low-authority sites (DR below 10) is a red flag.
- Anchor text distribution: A natural profile contains a mix: brand name anchors, bare URL anchors, generic phrases (“visit this site,” “read more”), and keyword-rich anchors. If keyword-rich anchors exceed 5-10% of your total, the profile may appear manipulated. Google’s Penguin algorithm specifically targets unnatural anchor text patterns.
- Link velocity: Review links gained and lost over the past 3-6 months. Sudden spikes in new links from low-quality sources can trigger spam filters. Steady, organic link growth looks far more natural. Also investigate whether traffic drops correlate with periods of significant link loss.
Toxic Link Detection & Cleanup
Toxic links come from spam sites, hacked domains, link farms, or paid link networks. Google’s spam algorithms handle most toxic links automatically by ignoring them, but in some cases, particularly after a manual action, you may need to take direct action.
- High-spam-score domains: Identify referring domains with unusually high spam scores. These often include sites with no original content, sites in unrelated languages, or domains that exist solely to sell links.
- Irrelevant industries: Links from gambling, pharmaceutical, or adult content sites to a professional services business are almost certainly spam. They may have resulted from negative SEO attacks, hacked sites, or scraped content.
- Google Disavow Tool: If you’ve identified genuinely harmful links that you cannot get removed through outreach, submit them via Google’s Disavow Tool. But use this cautiously. Disavowing legitimate links removes their positive value. Only disavow links you’re confident are harmful, particularly in the context of a manual penalty.
Competitor Backlink Analysis
Studying the backlink profiles of pages that outrank you reveals link building opportunities you might not have considered.
- Link gap analysis: Use Ahrefs or Semrush to find domains that link to your competitors but not to you. These represent proven opportunities because the linking site has already demonstrated willingness to link to content in your niche.
- Top-linked content: What type of content earns the most links in your industry? Original research, data studies, comprehensive guides, and free tools tend to attract links naturally. Analyse your competitors’ most-linked pages and consider creating something more thorough or more current.
- Industry directories and associations: Trade associations, chambers of commerce, industry bodies, and professional directories often link to member businesses. These are high-authority, topically relevant links that many businesses overlook. Check which directories list your competitors and apply where appropriate.

5. Local SEO Checklist
For businesses with a physical location or those serving a specific geographic area, local SEO can deliver a higher return on investment than any other channel. “Near me” searches have grown by over 400% across the UK and US in the past five years, and appearing in Google’s local map pack, the three business listings shown above organic results, means direct customer enquiries without paying for a single click.
Google Business Profile Optimisation
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the cornerstone of local SEO. It controls how your business appears in Google Maps, the local pack, and the Knowledge Panel that displays when someone searches for your business by name.
- Profile completeness: Have you filled in every available field? Business name, address, phone number, website, hours of operation, primary category, secondary categories, business description, services, products, attributes (wheelchair accessible, free Wi-Fi, etc.). Google favours complete profiles over sparse ones.
- Category selection: Is your primary category the most specific option available? “Digital Marketing Agency” is better than “Marketing Agency” if that’s what you are. Add relevant secondary categories too, but don’t add unrelated ones in an attempt to appear for more searches.
- Photos and media: Are your GBP photos current, high-quality, and representative of your business? Google’s own data shows that businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks. Upload interior shots, exterior shots, team photos, and product/service images.
- Review management: Are you responding to reviews, both positive and negative? A professional, thoughtful response to a negative review demonstrates customer care and can actually improve perception. Aim for a response rate above 90% and an average response time under 48 hours.
- Google Posts: Publishing posts through GBP (events, offers, updates) signals to Google that the profile is actively managed. Post at least once a fortnight to maintain visibility.
NAP Consistency
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Consistent business information across every online mention reinforces trust with Google’s local algorithms. Inconsistencies create confusion and can prevent your business from ranking in local results.
- Cross-platform consistency: Does your website, GBP, Facebook page, LinkedIn profile, X (Twitter) account, and every other platform show the exact same business name, address format, and phone number? “123 High Street, Suite 4” on one platform and “123 High St., Ste 4” on another can cause issues.
- Directory listings: Check Yell, Thomson Local, Yelp, Trustpilot, industry-specific directories, and any other platforms where your business is listed. Update or remove outdated information.
- Former locations: If you’ve moved premises, are old address listings still live? Stale location data in directories confuses both customers and search engines. Track down and update every mention.
Local Citations
Local citations are mentions of your business name and address on third-party websites, even without a link. A mention on a local news site, a chamber of commerce directory, or an industry association page sends a local relevance signal to Google.
- Target UK/US-specific directories: local chambers of commerce, industry associations, Better Business Bureau (US), Companies House listings (UK), local authority business directories, and sector-specific platforms.
- Clean up inconsistent citations. Different name variations for the same business across multiple directories fragment your local authority.
- Identify directories where competitors are listed but you aren’t, and submit your business.
6. Analytics & Measurement
An audit is a snapshot. Its value comes from repeating it at regular intervals and tracking changes over time. That requires analytics tools configured correctly, not just installed but actually measuring the metrics that matter to your business.
GA4 Configuration
With Universal Analytics officially deprecated, GA4 is the only option. But GA4’s event-based data model is fundamentally different from the session-based model most marketers learned on. Many sites migrated to GA4 but never completed the configuration properly, which means they’re collecting data but missing critical insights.
- Conversion tracking: Are your most important actions (form submissions, phone call clicks, purchases, demo requests) defined as conversion events? Without conversion tracking, you can measure traffic but not business impact. This makes it impossible to determine which SEO efforts are generating revenue.
- Enhanced measurement: GA4 can automatically track page scrolls, file downloads, outbound link clicks, site search queries, and video engagement. Check that these enhanced measurement events are switched on in your data stream settings.
- Data streams: Are separate data streams configured correctly for web, iOS, and Android if applicable?
- Data retention: GA4’s default data retention period is 2 months. Change this to 14 months in Admin > Data Settings > Data Retention. Without this change, you lose the ability to compare year-on-year performance in Explorations reports.
- Google Signals: Enable Google Signals for cross-device tracking and remarketing audience creation. Note that enabling Signals may trigger data thresholds that hide some data in reports when daily user counts are low.
Google Search Console Configuration
Where GA4 measures user behaviour on your site, Search Console measures your site’s performance in Google Search. It’s the most authoritative source of data about how Google sees your pages.
- All site versions verified: www, non-www, HTTP, HTTPS. Confirm which property is set as the primary domain. If you use Domain property verification (via DNS), this is handled automatically.
- Sitemap submitted and healthy: Check the Sitemaps report. Is the status “Success”? Are there errors? Does the sitemap URL count roughly match the number of pages you expect to be indexed?
- Index coverage monitoring: Review the Pages report weekly. Set up email alerts for new indexing issues. A sudden spike in “Not indexed” pages often indicates a technical problem that needs immediate attention.
- Performance report segmentation: Filter by country (UK, US), device type (mobile, desktop, tablet), and search type (web, image, video) to identify platform-specific opportunities and problems.
